Sharing my secrets

Last night I breezed through Susanna Keysen's "The Camera My Mother Gave Me." I couldn't put it down- partly because it's only 120 pages, but mostly because it's a subject that every woman can relate to. It's a quick read but well worth it, funny and heartwarming all at the same time. I'd be open to trading with someone who has also read something recently that they need to share with the world.

Wonderful Graffti is one of my new favorite home design websites. You can create large (or small if you'd like) stickers for your walls, doors, windows, furniture anything. You can choose one of their existing quotes or create a personal slogan, use your family name or Chinese symbols to have completely customizes artwork for your home. The best part? You can sign up for a free sample to check out the material and color. I alrerady sent away for and received mine ;) Thanks Alison!

I might soon be buying this cute owl pincushion from Marigold Tree's Etsy shop

Anyone going to Sweden soon? If so can you get me some of this?

Have you seen the new brand from Crate & Barrel? CB2 is a little more funky and a little more reasonable.

Ryan McGinness

On Saturday, we went to the Ryan McGinness art exhibit at Montserrat Art College in Beverly. After seeing his work in person, his website cannot do him justice. I was completely blown away. Everything from the colors, to the subjects, to the interaction he creates with his art was amazing. His technique is, for lack of a better word, cool. He layers stencils on top of each other in a somewhat thoughtful manner that doesn't manage to distract you. It draws you in and makes you want to explore every inch of the paintings, wall art, soccer balls, etc.

There was a family there with us with two small boys and it was so refreshing to see the Mom and Dad showing the kids around the gallery, explaining what certain objects represent and asking the kids for their interpretation. My pictures can't even give the full impression of the exhibit because it is truly something to experience in person, in 3-D (or is it 2-D?). Anyway, if a Ryan exhibits comes to your town and you want your world to be rocked, you will make a point of going.

Weekend (belated)

A little hectic at work these days and here we are midweek before I get a chance to post about my great weekend. A trip to Harvard Square on Sunday proved to be very relaxing and just what I was looking for.

Finally got a chance to get to Mint Julep. How fantasic is that store? If I ever open my own shop, MJ will definitely be a huge part of my inspiration. I especially loved the decor- the location use to be a candy shop and they kept the original "Candy" sign hanging over the dressing room. And a Bret Bataclan/Smile Boston painintg? Fab.

Beadworks! I haven't been to a real bead store in quite some time. So excited to make some new earrings. Could have spent far more than $18.17 so I made myself leave...

Best hot chocolate ever at LA Burdick's. I opted for the chai this time but am glad to say it did not disappoint.

Saw some great wall tiles at Cambridge Artist's Coop

And yes, I already made my earrings...couldn't stop myself.

Music Fridays

I love music and going to shows. Right now, the Boston music scene is the best it's been in years. I probably average about 3-4 shows a month- anything from a dive bar to an arena. Every other Friday or so, I'm going to post of my favorite artists and songs for you to enjoy (and I really hope you do). If anyone sees an mp3 on here they would like me to remove, please just let me know and I will do so immediately.

Rock on!

Tiger Saw - Singing With Ghosts

Victory at Sea - To You and Me

Eyes Like Knives - Skulls

The Elected - The Band and Trust

The Flaming Lips - The Wand

We Are Scientists - Bomb Inside the Bomb

Matt Pond PA - Closer

Corners of My Home

This is the wall right above my tv and I love to sit and stare at it during commercials or when another mindless MTV reality comes on. I found the mirror at a local church yard sale when they were closing up- told me to pack anything I could fit into a bag for $1. I love the Victorian look of it. The hand woven basket was a gift from Hawaii- it was a fresh green at first but apparently over time, it turns to its true color which is closer to a tan. The angel woman statue was also a gift from when my mom passed away. I like to have things around me that remind me of her- in this way, it's like she's looking over us and it's really nice to know she's here, especially since she taught me everything Iknow about arts and crafts.

I took the picture of the drums on Shakedown Street at Bonnaroo in 2003. I then took a photography class and developed the print myself. Looking at it brings back some great memories of Bonnaroo- the music, the people, the sun :)

I like to switch up the shelves' contents every once in a while- they usually become the main place to display my special seasonal decorations. Maybe that's a future corner to share...

McSweeneys

I'll be posting lots of fun from the land of McSweeneys

Let's start with:

AN OPEN LETTER TOMY ABILITY TO LOSE INTERESTIN THINGS EASILY
July 11, 2005

Dear Ability to Lose Interest in Things Easily,
Hey, hey, look at me, look at me. I'll try to make this quick for you. I wasn't going to bring this up, because you always seem so happy trying new things, but this is getting ridiculous. I can't afford all this. If you want to play drums, hey, cool, but play them more than three times. It's like you forgot they were there. And why did you get a keyboard? And don't tell me it's because you got tired of the guitar—that's not going to work with me, mister. Here's the thing: I'm sorry to be the one to tell you this, but you're not very musically talented, and by "very" I mean "at all." Maybe if you stuck with one of them you wouldn't be so mediocre at all of them.

Listen, over here, hello! No, I don't know what that bird outside is doing. Focus, all right? Throw your yo-yo and juggling balls away. The only time those things are touched is when I move them to a new apartment. Which brings me to my next point. Why do we move every year? Just once I would like to not have to move. It's always, "Let's try this neighborhood, the apartments are cooler here, this way we don't have to clean it." I'm sick of it, Ability to Lose Interest in Things Easily.

When we were kids—God damn it, quit playing Minesweeper; you're never going to beat my score—when we were kids, it made sense to be like this, but we're 25 and a half now. It's time we don't take Grandma's favorite calligraphy pen and never learn how to properly use it. And maybe you should listen to all of the Spanish language CDs I bought you, not just the first one. No, I'm not going to buy you Polish on CD, at least not until you learn Spanish.

Look, maybe this is none of my business—your love life is your love life—but damn, why don't you call people back? I don't know if that's the same bird. How would I know that? I guess you could call the park district and join a bird watchers' club, but hey, just listen. You go out with someone a couple times and then you just stop calling them. That's fucked up. It takes two weeks for you to get bored of someone. Remember the waitress? Shit, man, some people would love to go out with a waitress. You play two rounds of phone tag and that's it. There's no effort. Why do you think you're alone? Oh, yeah, it's "by choice." Pathetic.

Son of a bitch, quit looking stuff up on the Internet. No one just e-mailed you in the last five minutes, OK? No, I didn't know the average yearly rainfall in Seattle is 36.2 inches. No, we're not moving there. You've never owned an umbrella. I suppose we would grow our hair out if we moved there. Maybe we do need a trim, though ... Fuck, listen to me.

Yeah, I know, those crosswords are hard. I never finish them, either. Damn, you'r
e doing it again, Ability to Lose Interest in Things Easily. This is pointless. Call me when you get some focus. I'm going to go check out that bird.

Love always,
Douglas Greuloch
